Wind Dance farm is a
multi-generation family farm that sits atop a hill in Avila. Scott
Ritterbuck tells us that his family moved onto the property to manage the farm
about 2 years ago. From being a business broker to running a farm must
have been quite a transition for Scott and his family. The farm started
by Michael and Sherry Ritterbuck in 2001 and only had a single tree on the
property. Now, Wind Dance farm is the home to over 250 avocado trees, 100
fruit trees, olive trees, and a vegetable garden, as well as a llama, chickens
and alpacas.
Scott's wife, Lisa, tells us that
the alpaca's are a part of their overall approach to farming sustainably.
By using the alpaca's pellets for their compost and as a natural fertilizer,
they are able to avoid using chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
Going along with this overall view of sustainability, the Ritterbuck's have
solar panels to cut their energy costs and environmental impacts.
Wind Dance Farm sells their
avocados, olive oil and a variety of vegetables at the Avila Valley Farmers
Market on Fridays. Check out their website for more info.
